What is an “Integrated Massage”? The word, integrated, refers to two different aspects of our views on the subject of massage. - We view the human body as an integrated system and not as separate parts. To best understand the needs of our clients, we design a session that takes into account all aspects of the individual that we are working with. This includes not only the underlying muscular tissue but also the spiritual and emotional state of being as well. This general concept is where the ever-popular phrase “mind-body-spirit” comes from. In life, it is helpful to notice ways in which all things are interconnected.
- An “Integrated Massage Therapist” uses a blend of many techniques to create a truly unique healing art form.
Brief Description of Specialties: - Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy "Barefoot Massage" (AOBT) The "DEEPEST, most luxurious massage on the planet" This is a type of barefoot massage where the therapist stands on the massage table with the help of overhead bars to deliver a firm, broad, and compressive style of pressure to the client. This is most suited to atheletes and those who need deeper work.
- Swedish Massage This massage focuses on relieving tension, stimulating circulation, and promoting total mind and body relaxation. Contrary to popular belief, a swedish massage can range from very light to very firm pressure- depending on the needs of the client.
- Deep Tissue Massage A therapeutic massage that helps alleviate pain, muscle spasms, stress, tension, and tissue damage. An "Integrated Deep Tissue Massage" session incorporates many different techniques to best suit your individual needs. During your appointment, your body will be assessed for muscular imbalances. This massage session focuses on bringing your body back into balance for optimal functioning by relieving adhesions in the muscular system and elongating shortened muscle fibers. It also works on the body's myofascial network of connective tissue to restore free movement.
- Hot Stone Pohaku Massage Penetrating heat from smooth oiled and warmed stones is used to relieve tense muscles and sore joints. Combined with Swedish and Deep Tissue techniques and with the use of aromatherapy, this creates an unforgettable, thoroughly relaxing experience.
- Lomilomi The traditional Hawaiian healing practice that brings the spirit into harmony with the earth. There are many diverse styles of lomilomi, but its intention is to focus on the spirit first and joints or muscles second. Emotional, physical, and spiritual blockages must all be addressed. Often shells, stones, and plants can be used for healing as well as prayer and massage. My lomilomi training is on-going and has only just begun. I first started studying and incorporating it into my work 10 years ago, and I have a great deal of respect for the local practitioners who have studied Lomilomi their entire lives. Please note that I am not a native born lomilomi practitioner, and I incorporate my own interpretations of this healing tradition.
- Pregnancy (Prenatal) Massage A special massage for the mother to be. This massage is performed with the use of cushions in a side laying position. Please check with your doctor to make sure your pregnancy is well suited for massage, especially if you have any medical risk factors or other health conditions.
- Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy This massage is known for being "the deepest, most luxurious massage on the planet." The therapist performs the massage using their feet while supporting their weight on overhead bars. This method provides for a broad, firm, and compressive massage that elongates the body and spine.
- Shiatsu and Acupressure Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork meaning "finger pressure." This massage works on the body's meridians (energetic pathways) to help encourage the flow of chi. Both rhythmic and sustained pressure is used, and stretching is incorporated. No lotion or lubricant is applied to the body, and this massage is usually performed with the client fully clothed in loose material.
- Heart Centered Therapy Heart Centered Therapy helps gain insight and awareness into your inner being through the use of imagery and dialogue. With-held emotions and traumatic past experiences are often stored deep within the tissues of the body. The unresolved conflicts that are housed in our physical selves cause dis-ease within the body and psyche, and can disrupt health and well-being. By transforming our unconscious belief systems we can experience true freedom without inner conflict. This can be accomplished by the simple act of love. *Please note that the visualizations used in my work address emotions as they are stored in the body as tension- NOT emotions as they are involved in your mental health. By recognizing patterns between tension in the body and your emotional state and learning how to relax and lower your stress level through meditation, breathing, and visualization- chronic tension patterns can begin to dissolve.
- Light Healing Activation This form of energy work increases the amount of energy present in the cellular level to promote healing. Energetic release points are held or stimulated to release blockages. High vibrational levels are maintained in order to promote healing and unification with the spiritual planes. Meditation and visualizations can increase awareness during treatments.
- Reiki Universal life energy is transmitted to restore balance and harmony. This form of healing was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui a century ago in Japan. Some people believe that it was originally an ancient method of Tibetan healing, but there are many other theories of origination as well. Reiki is the universal energy of life and can be a powerful healing experience. This healing technique is most suitable for people who seek compassionate touch but are unable to receive traditional massage because of a medical condition. As a Reiki Master Practitioner, I am able to train others to use this method. Click here for more information from the National Institutes of Health
- Neuromuscular Therapy Sustained ischemic pressure on trigger points helps to relieve pain and neuromuscular dysfunction in the body. The pumping action created upon release of the pressure on the tissue helps restore circulation to the affected areas, therefore bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients while carrying away toxins and waste. When combined with other types of massage, such as deep tissue, this technique is highly effective. Sonia takes a unique approach to NMT by using knowledge from both eastern and western models of massage theory.
- Connective Tissue Massage (Myofascial Release)Works to free restrictions in the fascia. This tissue is what supports and interconnects all of the structures, muscles, and organs of our body.
- Reflexology Hand and foot reflexology stimulates pressure points that correspond to specific parts/organs of the body. This helps bring increased circulation (nutrients and oxygen) and clear imbalances in the vital energy pathways of the body.
- Thai Table Stretching This form of bodywork is based on traditional Thai massage and alters the techniques to be received comfortably on a massage table. Many people often describe it as feeling like yoga because the therapist encourages deep muscle release by assisted stretching. This helps to restore energy flow throughout the body.
- Fertility Massage A special protocol to complement and prepare the body for conception. See our fertility massage page for more information.
